Coach Broyles' Playbook for Alzheimer's Caregivers:

Channel 8 on Frank Broyles and the Playbook

A Practical Tips Guide

"Most coaches get things done right. The winners get the right things done."

I hope this Playbook is an example of a winner getting the right things done, and that you find it useful. It is my gift to you in the hope that you can benefit from my experience.

My best advice to you is to treasure each day and live it to the fullest. Cherish the time you spend together and, perhaps most important, love each other. I hope you find peace in knowing that it is still possible to live and love when someone you love is living with Alzheimer's disease.

Frank Broyles
University of Arkansas, Razorback Athletic Director

Beginning in the summer of 2007, 100,000 copies of Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers will be distributed through independent pharmacies and Alzheimer’s Associations in Oklahoma, made possible by an original grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and a donation from the 2006 Forget Me Not Golf Classic.

Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers is a practical tips guide for those providing care and support to Alzheimer’s patients. Inspired by his late wife Barbara’s battle with the disease, Coach Broyles developed this reference guide to help caregiver’s cope with everyday challenges faced by Alzheimer’s patients and their families. The Playbook is a social model, not a medical model, inspiring caregivers to do things with the patient, and not for him or her.

Currently, the Playbook is available at all Alzheimer’s Association offices across Arkansas, free of charge. Through efforts with the Oklahoma Arkansas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and the Barbara Broyles’ Foundation, the Forget Me Not Golf Classic was able to raise funds to help the Playbook expand into Oklahoma. 100,000 copies of the guide will be available in pharmacies, assisted living homes across the state and in the local Alzheimer’s Association offices in Oklahoma. Henderson Financial Group will also be an official distributor of the Playbook. This push is the first step in launching the Playbook nationally.

“The key to fighting this battle is awareness, and we were able to spread the message with the Forget Me Not Golf Classic. It is a wonderful platform for us to educate others. People don’t understand the disease, and consequently we’re not getting the funding we need to find a cure. We believe that you can find a cure for any health problem with money, awareness and support, and that’s what the Forget Me Not Classic did. I’m so proud to be a part of it,” said Coach Broyles. The playbook was developed collaboratively by the UAMS Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Beverly Healthcare, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the national Alzheimer's Association and Caldwell Marketing and Media. Wal-Mart is helping distribute copies of the Playbook by mailing copies to Arkansas families dealing with Alzheimer's. Arkansas Wal-Mart stores also have copies available free of charge in their pharmacy departments.
